Urban serenity: The Eve Hotel redefines boutique luxury in Sydney’s creative core

In the cultural crosshatch of Redfern and Surry Hills, The Eve Hotel Sydney emerges as a modern sanctuary for travelers who value design, locality, and understated luxury. With bold interiors, curated experiences, and a vibrant neighbourhood at its doorstep, this boutique hotel sets a new benchmark for urban hospitality in Australia.

A location with local soul

Tucked into Baptist Street on the fringes of Redfern and Surry Hills, The Eve Hotel reclaims the idea of what it means to stay “in the city.” There’s no Opera House view, no skyscraper skyline—but that’s precisely the point. Instead, guests are immersed in a living, breathing neighbourhood rich with character and creativity. Redfern, long known for its cultural depth and artistic community, hums with life—and The Eve has nestled itself into the heart of that rhythm.

Just steps from Centennial Park, the Sydney Cricket Ground, and a light rail line that links you to the CBD in minutes, The Eve is perfectly situated for those who like to explore on foot and live like locals. Its position, bordering the stylish Surry Hills district, places it among indie fashion outlets, hidden cafes, and a growing number of must-try restaurants and bars. It’s a place where Sydney reveals its lesser-known but no less vibrant face.

The Eve Hotel Sydney is part of Redfern's Wunderlich Lane precinct.

First impressions: Design that tells a story

Walk through The Eve’s oversized timber doors and you’re immediately swept into a dialogue between architecture and emotion. The lobby doesn’t shout luxury—it whispers it. Snow-white walls frame sculptural breeze blocks; glazed ceramic reception desks stand quietly proud. But the real scene-stealers are the eclectic furnishings: a cobalt blue Gervasoni chair shaped like a puffer jacket, a plush mohair Thonet in soft peach, and burgundy Cassina Utrechts lounging low against the wall.

This carefully curated space is the result of a design dream team assembled by the hotel’s parent company, Toga Group. Every detail—from the breeze-block patterns to the buttery custom-made leather lounges—evokes tactile intimacy and visual flair. The welcome is further elevated by a warm hospitality team who strike that rare balance between professional and personable.

The lobby chairs are the first thing that stands out at The Eve Hotel Sydney.

Rooms that reside in calm

Despite the hotel’s energetic locale, guest rooms at The Eve are a study in tranquility. Accessed through a peaceful corridor lined with arched windows and views into a green internal courtyard, each of the 102 rooms is a quiet refuge from the city’s bustle.

In my Garden Room, autumnal tones and rich textures create a cosy, lived-in feel. Sage wool rugs, rust velvet pillows, and walnut cabinetry pair with terrazzo countertops and ceramics that echo the hotel’s entrance motifs. Each room includes either a Juliet balcony or a private terrace—an urban rarity—while the Garden Rooms feature serene courtyards with seating for four.

The small touches are what elevate the experience: artisanal toiletries by Saardé scented with rosemary and lemon myrtle; hand-blown ochre and green glassware (also available for purchase next door); a minibar stocked with local icons like Four Pillars gin, Pepe Saya caramels, and StrangeLove sodas. And the pièce de résistance? A eucalyptus-green custom bathrobe that rivals the best in the country—yes, even the cult favourite from The Calile in Brisbane.

The Eve Hotel's rooms feature an autumn palette.

Rooftop relaxation and spa serenity

Level five is where The Eve truly flexes its lifestyle credentials. The rooftop pool is a 20-metre oasis framed by cabanas, native plantings, and an atmosphere that begs for lazy afternoons. Though rain keeps me from taking a dip, I’m assured that the underwater sound system turns any swim into a full sensory experience.

For those drawn more to indulgence than laps, The Parlour Room spa offers a cocooning escape. Adored by beauty insiders and “skinfluencers,” this cream-and-latte-toned haven specializes in slow beauty rituals that mirror the hotel’s relaxed pace. The ambience is ethereal, the treatment menu modern and holistic—a natural companion to the hotel’s new “Reset Ritual” package, which combines a night’s stay with bespoke spa treatments starting at AUD 1049.

The rooftop pool at The Eve Hotel Sydney is a show-stopper.

From coffee to cocktails: A culinary collab

The Eve’s dining and drinking experiences are as layered as its design. Bar Julius, located on the ground floor, blends retro flair with contemporary comfort under a vaulted ceiling adorned with artwork by Louise Olsen of Dinosaur Designs. Open from 6:30am until midnight, it serves everything from soft-boiled eggs with pork hock toast soldiers in the morning to cheeseburgers paired with Tasmanian pinot at night—all beneath a striking portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, eyes closed in serene defiance.

Upstairs, Lottie offers a playful spin on modern Mexican cuisine. Even on a stormy Monday, it pulses with life, its mezcaleria humming and diners gathered around tortilla warmers embossed with the restaurant’s custom insignia. The compact menu is sharp, inventive, and deeply satisfying—testament to the care taken in every facet of this hotel.

Just beyond The Eve’s walls, Wunderlich Lane opens up a microcosm of culinary gems. Highlights include Olympus for Greek fine dining, Baptist Street Rec. Club for craft cocktails, and Island Radio’s Southeast Asian fusion. R by Raita Noda, an intimate 15-seat omakase, and Regina La Pizzeria keep the options fresh, while a Messina gelato outlet provides the perfect sweet send-off.

A modern classic in the making

The Eve Hotel doesn’t just reflect Sydney’s evolving cultural landscape—it helps shape it. With its strong sense of place, sharp design language, and seamless hospitality, it’s more than a boutique stay—it’s a lifestyle manifesto. For repeat visitors and those seeking a new perspective on the Harbour City, The Eve offers a grounded yet elevated alternative to the predictable CBD stay.
