Queensland holds on to force State of Origin decider

A thrilling Game Two sees the Maroons withstand a fierce Blues comeback to keep the series alive

Queensland’s strong start sets the tone

In a pulsating State of Origin clash at Perth’s Optus Stadium, Queensland edged out New South Wales 26-24, setting up a dramatic series decider on July 9 at Sydney’s Accor Stadium. The Maroons established dominance early, crossing the try line four times in the first half to build a commanding 26-6 lead at the break.

Queensland’s attacking firepower was on full display, with Xavier Tabuai-Fidow scoring two tries, and Kalyn Ponga Munster and Selwyn Capewell each adding one. Valentine Holmes proved reliable with the boot, converting all five of his goal attempts, keeping the scoreboard ticking for the visitors.

The Blues, however, had a daunting task ahead of them. Despite being down by 20 points at halftime, New South Wales refused to fold, rallying back with determination in the second half.

Blues fight back but fall just short

Brian To’o emerged as the hero for New South Wales, completing a spectacular hat-trick that reignited hope for the defending champions. His three tries, combined with efforts from star forwards Stephen Crichton and Angus Crichton, clawed the Blues back into the contest. A crucial try by Angus Crichton in the 72nd minute cut Queensland’s lead to just two points, setting up a nail-biting finish.

However, the Blues were haunted by costly errors with the boot. Zac Lomax, usually reliable, missed three of his five goal attempts, leaving vital points on the field. This contrasted sharply with Holmes’ perfect goal-kicking display, which ultimately made the difference.

In a tense moment, NSW halfback Jarome Luai was placed on report for a dangerous incident when he appeared to rake his fingers across Reuben Cotter’s eyes in the 23rd minute. This added pressure to an already uphill battle for the Blues.

Decider set for Accor Stadium

With the series now tied at one apiece, all eyes turn to the winner-takes-all Game Three showdown on July 9 in Sydney. Both sides will look to iron out the mistakes and seize the opportunity to claim Origin glory.

Queensland’s ability to build a strong early lead and hold off a relentless Blues charge highlights their resilience and mental toughness. Meanwhile, New South Wales will reflect on missed chances and costly goal-kicking errors but can take heart from their impressive second-half fightback.

The stage is set for an unforgettable decider between two fiercely competitive sides, as State of Origin drama continues to captivate rugby league fans across Australia.
