William Saliba sidelined: Arteta confirms injury blow ahead of Arsenal’s final match

Arsenal’s defensive depth is once again under scrutiny as manager Mikel Arteta confirmed William Saliba will miss the final game of the season with a hamstring injury. The setback, coupled with Gabriel’s continued absence, poses a challenge for the Gunners as they conclude a campaign that once promised so much more.

A painful end to a milestone moment

William Saliba’s 100th Premier League appearance for Arsenal should have been a moment of celebration. Instead, it ended prematurely and painfully. The 23-year-old French defender was forced off at halftime during Arsenal’s recent clash with Newcastle United, later diagnosed with a hamstring injury. The news was confirmed by Mikel Arteta ahead of Arsenal’s final Premier League game against Southampton.

“William is going to be out for a few weeks, unfortunately,” Arteta told beIN SPORTS. “He pulled his hamstring against Newcastle.” While Arsenal secured a convincing win and effectively sealed second place, Saliba’s early exit marked another chapter in the club’s late-season injury troubles.

For a player who has become a mainstay at the heart of Arsenal’s backline, the injury comes at a critical juncture. It not only rules him out of Sunday’s season finale but raises questions about his availability for summer preparations and international duties.

William Saliba suffered a hamstring injury last time out.

Centre-back crisis at the worst time

With Saliba joining Gabriel on the sidelines—both due to hamstring injuries—Arteta is now without his preferred centre-back pairing. Gabriel has been absent since early April, and the timing of both injuries could not be worse as the club looks to finish strong and build momentum for next season.

In their place, Riccardo Calafiori and Jakub Kiwior are expected to form an emergency central defense partnership. Calafiori, who typically plays as a left-back, was signed from Bologna last summer and stepped in to replace Saliba mid-match against Newcastle. Kiwior, meanwhile, has deputized admirably for Gabriel in recent weeks but now faces a sterner test with both senior centre-backs out.

Adding to Arteta’s defensive dilemma, Dutch international Jurrien Timber remains unavailable following recent ankle surgery. He, too, is sidelined for “a few weeks,” effectively ruling out any hope of an end-of-season return.

Transfer speculation looms over Saliba’s future

While Saliba’s immediate concern is recovery, Arsenal fans are also hoping this isn’t the last time they see him in red and white. Rumors of a move to Real Madrid have persisted over recent transfer windows, fueled by the Spanish giants’ ongoing search for a long-term successor to Antonio Rüdiger.

Saliba’s combination of composure, athleticism, and ball-playing ability has made him one of Europe’s most coveted defenders. But despite Madrid’s interest, their recent acquisition of Dean Huijsen—a record-breaking deal for a defender—may mean that Saliba remains out of reach, at least for now. Arsenal, for their part, remain firm on retaining their defensive lynchpin. Saliba signed a new long-term contract in 2023, a move that seemed to indicate his commitment to the North London club. However, the unpredictable nature of the transfer market means speculation is unlikely to disappear any time soon.

Eyes on the future

Despite finishing second in the Premier League, this season will leave Arsenal with mixed emotions. They began the campaign as strong title contenders but faltered during a poor run of form in February and March, allowing Manchester City to eventually pull ahead in the race. Now, the focus shifts to recovery and reinforcement. Arteta’s side has shown incredible growth over the past two seasons, but depth—particularly in defense—remains a concern. The injuries to Saliba, Gabriel, and Timber have highlighted the need for additional options at the back if the Gunners are to compete on multiple fronts next season.

For Saliba, the coming weeks will be about rest and rehabilitation. Whether his future lies firmly at the Emirates or elsewhere remains to be seen. But for now, Arsenal must face Southampton without one of their brightest stars—and fans will be hoping that his absence is only temporary.
