From shadows to strategy: Sage Hospitality takes the helm at Colorado’s iconic stanley hotel

The Stanley Hotel, famously known as the eerie muse behind Stephen King’s The Shining, is about to begin a new chapter. With Sage Hospitality Group stepping in as its new management partner, this historic Colorado landmark is preparing for thoughtful revitalization and bold new ventures—including a potential horror film museum. The move signals both preservation and innovation for one of America’s most storied hotels.

A new era for a legendary hotel

Perched in the scenic enclave of Estes Park, Colorado, the Stanley Hotel has long been a destination shrouded in mystery, history, and pop culture reverence. Built in 1909 and known internationally as the inspiration for the Overlook Hotel in Stephen King’s The Shining, the Stanley has undergone many transformations across its century-plus lifespan. Now, with Sage Hospitality Group taking over management duties, the hotel stands at the threshold of yet another reinvention.

This transition follows the recent acquisition of the 68-acre property by the Colorado Educational and Cultural Facilities Authority through its subsidiary, the Stanley Partnership for Art Culture and Education (SPACE). Although John W. Cullen IV—who previously owned and operated the property—has stepped back from day-to-day management, he will remain intimately involved as SPACE’s chairman and CEO, ensuring continuity and vision for the historic site.

Balancing heritage with hospitality innovation

The Stanley Hotel is more than a backdrop for horror lore. With 191 guest rooms, an expansive 25,000 square feet of meeting space, multiple restaurants and bars, a spa and wellness center, and the Stanley Live entertainment venue, the hotel is a multifaceted destination in its own right. Its listing on the National Register of Historic Places and membership in Historic Hotels of America speak to its preserved character and national significance.

Daniel del Olmo, president and co-CEO of Sage Hospitality Group, emphasized that the Stanley perfectly aligns with the company’s mission. “The Stanley Hotel represents everything we look for in a landmark property: a rich history, innovative programming, and deep community connections,” said del Olmo. His statement points to Sage’s approach of blending contemporary hospitality strategy with reverence for local legacy—something the Stanley has in spades.

A glimpse into the future

Under Sage’s management, the Stanley Hotel is preparing for a series of expansions and enhancements aimed at elevating both guest experiences and cultural programming. Among the most ambitious of these plans is the creation of a horror film museum, a project in partnership with Blumhouse—the powerhouse production studio behind modern horror hits like Get Out, The Purge, and Paranormal Activity. While still in its early stages, the proposed museum could establish the Stanley as a global destination for horror enthusiasts and cinephiles.

Hotel expansion plans are also under consideration, potentially adding more lodging capacity while maintaining the architectural charm that has made the Stanley an enduring attraction. With these developments, the property is poised to reinforce its identity not only as a hospitality venue, but as a dynamic center for arts, culture, and creative engagement.

Part of a larger vision

The Stanley now joins an esteemed list of properties under Sage Hospitality Group’s banner. From the Southern elegance of Perry Lane in Savannah, Georgia, to the laid-back luxury of One Ocean Resort in Atlantic Beach, Florida, and the alpine allure of Hotel Alpenrock in Breckenridge, Colorado, Sage has built a portfolio that emphasizes both destination uniqueness and elevated guest experience.

Their stewardship of the Stanley fits neatly into this philosophy—where history is not merely preserved, but amplified. With the new partnership, the Stanley isn’t just holding on to its past. It’s aiming for a future where legacy, imagination, and hospitality come together in haunting harmony.
