Why the partnership between Coach and the WNBA is a groundbreaking moment for women’s sports, fashion, and cultural empowerment

The 2025 WNBA season tips off amid growing excitement, marking a pivotal moment for women’s basketball and its expanding cultural influence. With record-breaking viewership and a new generation of star athletes like Paige Bueckers and Angel Reese capturing the public’s imagination, the league is more than just a sport — it’s a movement. The recent partnership between the iconic American fashion house Coach and the WNBA underscores this shift, blending sport and style to celebrate individuality, empowerment, and the evolving role of women in athletics and culture.

A new era for the WNBA

The Women’s National Basketball Association has transformed from a niche league into a mainstream phenomenon. Last year’s ratings soared by 170%, averaging 1.19 million viewers per game, a testament to the growing fan base and cultural relevance of players who are breaking barriers both on and off the court. Caitlin Clark’s Rookie of the Year honors and Angel Reese’s Met Gala appearance exemplify how these athletes are transcending sports to become cultural icons.

It’s within this context that Coach, a stalwart of American fashion, has made its move. Announced in April, the partnership focuses on Coach’s bag collections and the brand dressing players for pre- and post-game events, as well as public appearances. For Coach’s creative director Stuart Vevers, this collaboration is more than a sponsorship — it’s a creative alignment with the grounded, sporty yet expressive aesthetic shared by the athletes. “There’s something quite grounded about what they wear,” Vevers notes, highlighting the natural synergy between Coach’s American heritage and the players’ personal styles.

Fashion as a form of self-expression

Unlike the NBA, where player fashion is often spotlighted and monetized through multimillion-dollar contracts, the WNBA is only just beginning to capture the fashion world’s attention. Players’ salaries still pale in comparison to their male counterparts, with the WNBA average salary near $120,000 versus $9 million in the NBA. Yet, the influence these women wield is significant — not through luxury logos, but through authentic personal style.

Vevers emphasizes that Coach’s partnership is about individuality and creative expression. The players are using fashion as a language to tell their stories, blending comfort with bold, statement pieces. The WNBA Draft was a showcase of this ethos, with athletes donning everything from tailored suits to asymmetrical blazers and leather bustiers, often accessorized with Coach bags. Sonia Citron remarked on the importance of “tunnel fits,” describing the arena entrance as the players’ runway, where fashion and personality shine brightest.

Aneesah Morrow captured this sentiment perfectly: “What you wear walking into a game is more than just clothes. It’s a chance to show who you are.” For many players, fashion embodies their identity, their roots, and their values. This blend of sport and style redefines how athletes present themselves to the world and how fans, especially young girls, perceive role models.

The future of sport and style

While no runway collaborations are planned yet between Coach and the WNBA, Vevers sees limitless potential. “It feels right and authentic,” he says, underscoring the partnership’s cultural significance. Paige Bueckers describes the league as thriving at “the intersection of sport and culture,” powered by women who find strength through self-expression and creativity.

This partnership also has a wider impact beyond the players themselves. Vevers looks forward to sharing this world with his young daughter, Vivian, hoping it will inspire the next generation. The connection between mindset, confidence, and personal style is clear: as Hailey Van Lith puts it, “What you wear and your personal style are deeply connected to your mindset — how you approach the game, how you feel, and how you show up on the court.” 

The Coach-WNBA collaboration signals a significant cultural shift where women athletes are celebrated not just for their skills but for their style, stories, and leadership. As the league continues to grow, so too does the power of fashion as a tool for empowerment, creativity, and breaking down barriers — proving once again that sports and style can go hand in hand to inspire and transform.
