Max Verstappen Dismisses Red Bull Exit Concerns Amidst Turbulent Season Start

Four-time F1 world champion Max Verstappen has downplayed rumors of a potential departure from Red Bull, despite a challenging start to the 2025 season and public concerns from Red Bull’s motorsport advisor, Helmut Marko. Verstappen emphasizes his focus remains solely on improving the car’s performance.

Performance Struggles and Marko’s Concerns

Red Bull has faced a difficult start to the 2025 Formula 1 season, notably highlighted by Max Verstappen’s sixth-place finish at the Bahrain Grand Prix where he lacked the pace to genuinely challenge the front-runners. This dip in performance, compared to their dominant run in previous seasons, has fueled speculation about internal tensions within the team.

Following the Bahrain race, Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko publicly voiced his worries to Sky Sports, stating he was “worried a lot” that Verstappen might consider leaving, especially as the car currently struggles to consistently compete with rivals like McLaren. Verstappen, who has a contract with Red Bull until 2028, has also admitted to being unsatisfied with this season’s car.

Verstappen’s Focus and Dismissal of Rumors

Max Verstappen looked to downplay concerns that he might leave Red Bull.

When questioned about Marko’s comments and the ongoing rumors ahead of the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, Verstappen dismissed them, stating his full attention is on improving the car. “I don’t know, to be honest,” he told reporters regarding Marko’s remarks. “I just keep working, keep trying to improve the car.” He acknowledged Bahrain was a “pretty disappointing” weekend and stressed the team’s continuous effort to “come up with new ideas to try on the car.”

Verstappen adopted an “icy reply” with a smile when pressed further by a Sky Sports commentator, instructing them to “Just focus on commentating, I’ll focus on driving, and then we don’t need to think about any other scenarios.”

Despite being linked to rumored moves to Mercedes and Aston Martin over the past year in his pursuit of a fifth consecutive world title, Verstappen maintains that “A lot of people are talking about it except me.” He reiterated his relaxed stance and singular focus: “I just want to focus on my car, work with the people in the team – that’s the only thing I’m thinking about in Formula 1 at the moment.” While Bahrain was tough, Verstappen has achieved two podiums this season, including a win in Japan, but he currently trails McLaren’s Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri in the driver’s standings.
