Lucy Hale’s take on early 2010s beauty trends and her modern skincare routine

From iconic feather hair extensions to smoky eyes, Lucy Hale, star of Pretty Little Liars, looks back on the beauty trends she loved—and those she hopes stay in the past. Now in her 30s, Lucy shares how her skincare routine has evolved, her favorite products from Eucerin, and tips for glowing, healthy skin.

Revisiting early 2010s beauty: What Lucy Hale would bring back and what she wouldn’t

If you were glued to Pretty Little Liars during its heyday in the 2010s, you might remember some wild and unforgettable beauty trends. The show’s lead, Lucy Hale, who famously portrayed Aria Montgomery, has some fond memories of those looks — particularly the feather hair extensions.

“Aria had those feather hair extensions, and I would totally wear those again,” Lucy reveals with a smile. “I may be too old for that now, but it was really cool.” Yet, while the quirky hair accessories hold a special place in her heart, Lucy is now much more focused on skin health than daring hairstyles or heavy makeup.

She laughs, “The early days were full of colorful hair and intense smoky eyes, but now it’s all about a consistent skincare routine.” At 35, Lucy has traded the experimental for a more intentional approach. “In my 20s, I was breaking out a lot, but now, I deal more with dark spots and hyperpigmentation. That’s why I love working with Eucerin — their products really help with those issues.”

The skincare journey: From overdoing it to simplifying

Lucy’s skincare routine today reflects the wisdom gained over years of trial and error. “I used to be the girl with a 25-step skincare routine,” she admits. “But it wasn’t really working for me.” Instead, she’s embraced simplicity — focusing on clean, gentle products and consistency.

“I have sensitive skin, so being minimal is key,” she explains. “Eucerin’s Radiant Tone Collection is amazing because it targets dark spots and brings clarity without irritating my skin.” She shares that over time, her focus shifted from covering imperfections with makeup to nurturing her skin underneath. Professional care also plays a role. “Having a great dermatologist and regular facials makes a huge difference,” Lucy notes. She visits an aesthetician every four weeks to keep her skin clear and refreshed.

Alongside facials, Lucy swears by sleep as a beauty tool. “You really notice the difference in your skin when you get enough rest,” she says. Other favorite treatments include LED light therapy and gua sha, a traditional scraping tool that helps reduce puffiness and inflammation.

Beauty advice that sticks and hair adventures

Over the years, Lucy has received plenty of beauty tips, but one message stands out: “I feel the most beautiful when I’m not doing anything at all,” she reflects. “When I’m really aligned with what I love and being creative, that’s when my beauty shines from the inside out.” This philosophy shapes both her skincare and overall wellness.

When it comes to hair, Lucy is no stranger to change. While fans adore her signature dark bob, she’s currently experimenting with growing her hair out. “I want to try a ’70s shag haircut,” she reveals, excited about something new. “I’ve done almost every color and length but never bangs. The short dark cut is my ‘homeostasis’ look — it fits my personality — but I like to be adventurous too.”

Throwback trends: What’s staying, what’s gone forever

The Pretty Little Liars era was rife with bold makeup choices: smoky eyes, lots of eyeliner, and thin brows dominated the scene. Lucy remembers Aria’s style as uniquely her own, often mixing patterns and wearing unexpected skirts and ties. “I never really dressed like Aria in real life, but I loved stepping into her world because it was so different,” Lucy says. When asked if she’d ever revisit early 2000s trends like low-rise jeans or platform heels, she’s quick to respond: “I hope some things don’t come back — like low-rise jeans and Jeffrey Campbell platforms. I’m good with those staying in the past.”

The perfect date night look: Skincare first, then simple glam

Lucy’s beauty regimen extends to her ideal date night preparations. “Good skincare is the base for any makeup look,” she says. She starts with Eucerin Radiant Tone Cleanser, which contains lactic and glycolic acids to gently exfoliate and brighten her skin.

For nighttime dates, Lucy skips SPF but layers on Eucerin’s Dual Serum and night cream to nourish her skin. When it comes to makeup, she prefers minimalism. “I wouldn’t wear lipstick on a first date — too risky if you kiss!” she laughs. “I go for warm tones, sculpted, glowy skin, and keep my hair slicked back in a ponytail with a middle part and hoop earrings.”

Her outfit for a date night? “Wide-leg, high-waisted Levi’s jeans, a black off-the-shoulder bodysuit, and strappy black heels.” But the vibe is casual and fun — “I don’t think a first date should be dinner. I prefer something quick, like a concert, because sitting face-to-face can feel really intense. Great conversation is key.”

Memorable beauty moments from film

Lucy’s favorite beauty look from her acting career? She fondly recalls her role in The Hating Game, where her character — also named Lucy — wore a bold red lip throughout the movie. “That red lipstick was iconic,” she says. “It was a M.A.C shade called Flame Thrower. It was classic and really memorable.” Lucy even shares that her on-screen love interest was obsessed with that exact shade, adding a fun behind-the-scenes tidbit.

Beauty beyond the surface

Lucy Hale’s journey from a teenage star to a skincare enthusiast and beauty ambassador shows a meaningful evolution — one that embraces simplicity, self-care, and authenticity. While the bold trends of the Pretty Little Liars era hold nostalgic charm, Lucy’s current focus is on nurturing her skin and honoring inner beauty.

As she puts it, “True beauty comes from being comfortable in your own skin and doing what makes you happy.” Whether that’s feather extensions or glowing, healthy skin, Lucy continues to inspire with her honesty and radiant confidence.
