Lions pair Tuipulotu and Aki together to face Pumas

An intriguing centre partnership headlines the British and Irish Lions squad for their clash against Argentina in Dublin

A fresh centre combination takes the stage

On Friday night at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium, the British and Irish Lions will unveil a new centre partnership as Scotland’s Sione Tuipulotu teams up with Ireland’s Bundee Aki to face the Pumas. This pairing marks a notable decision by head coach Andy Farrell, given both players are typically more natural inside centres. For Tuipulotu, this will be his first international rugby appearance since Scotland’s victory over Australia last November, after missing the Six Nations through injury.

The Lions squad is still missing many players who recently featured in domestic finals, with only Leinster hooker Ronan Kelleher—named on the bench—having played a club game last week. This game will also be a milestone for tour captain Maro Itoje, who leads the side for the first time in his Lions career.

Meanwhile, the squad welcomes back Tadhg Furlong, who has struggled with injuries throughout the season. The tight-head prop has not played for Leinster since last month’s Champions Cup semi-final defeat and will begin this match on the bench. His Ireland teammate Finlay Bealham, who replaced injured Scotland prop Zander Fagerson, is set to wear the number three jersey.

Newcomers and familiar faces in a mixed squad

This Lions lineup features a blend of fresh talent and experienced campaigners. Among the 23 players selected, 14 are making their Lions debut, including Wales captain Jac Morgan in the back row and Tomos Williams, the Gallagher Premiership player of the season, who provides scrum-half cover from the bench.

Several players return from the Lions’ South Africa tour four years ago, including backs Bundee Aki, Marcus Smith, and Duhan van der Merwe, as well as forwards Luke Cowan-Dickie, Tadhg Beirne, and Tom Curry. Skipper Maro Itoje, replacements Tadhg Furlong and Elliot Daly also have extensive tour experience, featuring on both the recent South Africa trip and the New Zealand tour four years earlier.

After this fixture, the squad will depart for Australia, with their first match against the Western Force in Perth scheduled for June 28, kicking off the southern hemisphere leg of their tour.

Analysis: Farrell’s challenge and strategic choices

Rugby correspondent Chris Jones points out that Andy Farrell’s selections have been somewhat constrained by the timing of players arriving late to camp, with 15 members joining only the Monday before the game. As a result, Farrell has chosen almost exclusively from those training in Portugal last week, influencing key decisions such as the centre pairing.

The choice to start Bundee Aki and Sione Tuipulotu together, both contenders for the Test number 12 jersey, is especially notable. Additionally, Marcus Smith is selected at full-back, while Ireland’s Hugo Keenan and Scotland’s Blair Kinghorn are absent from the squad due to availability issues.

Farrell’s squad also shows familiarity in the half-back positions, with Northampton Saints duo Alex Mitchell and Fin Smith teaming up at nine and ten, reflecting a blend of cohesion and youth among the nine Englishmen starting. Perhaps the most significant selection is Tadhg Furlong’s inclusion on the bench. A stalwart in previous Lions tours, Furlong’s fitness return is a huge boost to the squad, especially with Zander Fagerson ruled out due to injury. His presence offers stability and experience in the front row for the upcoming demanding fixtures.

Line-up for Friday’s clash

British and Irish Lions starting XV:

Marcus Smith; Freddie Freeman, Sione Tuipulotu, Bundee Aki, Duhan van der Merwe; Fin Smith, Alex Mitchell; Jamie George, Luke Cowan-Dickie, Finlay Bealham, Maro Itoje (capt), Tadhg Beirne, Tom Curry, Jac Morgan, Dan Earl.

Replacements:

Ronan Kelleher, Steven Schoeman, Tadhg Furlong, Jack Cummings, Josh Pollock, Tomos Williams, Elliot Daly, Rory Darge.

This first Lions game serves as a preview for a tour full of promise and challenges. With a mix of new combinations and seasoned veterans, Andy Farrell’s squad looks ready to face Argentina and build momentum before heading to Australia for the heart of their campaign. Rugby fans around the world will be watching closely as these players begin their quest for Lions glory.
