How Monica Barbaro got ready for her first Met Gala

Oscar-nominated actress Monica Barbaro made a dazzling debut at the 2025 Met Gala, stepping onto the blue carpet in custom Christian Dior. With elegance drawn from vintage Parisian couture and a modern celebration of tailoring, Barbaro embodied the evening’s theme with timeless grace. We went behind the scenes with her to capture every detail—from the corseted construction to the soft spring-inspired makeup look that earned her a spot on the best dressed lists.

Beauty inspired by a spring stroll through Paris

To complement the precision of the look, Barbaro’s glam team crafted a makeup and hair design that felt soft and poetic. Dior Beauty handled both, with makeup by Samantha Lau and hair by Jacob Rozenberg. “This makeup look, Sam calls it the spring stroll on the Seine,” Barbaro shares. “It’s a rosy flush cheek—very spring, very youthful, bright, and fresh.”

The makeup was anchored in tones of pink, drawing inspiration from springtime Paris. Lau blended Dior’s Rosy Glow Blush in Rosewood and Pink Lilac for a natural flush, while the lips were lined with Dior Contour in Rose Spice and topped with Rouge Dior Lipstick in shades 724 Tendresse Velvet and 772 Classic Rosewood Velvet. “Drawing from the delicate beauty of spring in Paris, I used a palette of soft pinks and rose tones to evoke a sense of lightness, elegance, and effortless femininity,” Lau adds.

As for the hair, Rozenberg created glossy, loose waves that added softness to the tailored ensemble. The gentle curvature of the waves flowed perfectly beneath the tilt of her structured boater hat, allowing the full look to feel both composed and romantic.

Fashion as storytelling

Barbaro’s ensemble wasn’t just beautiful—it also told a story. With the evening’s dress code, “The Garden of Time,” encouraging guests to reflect on the intersection of time, fashion, and identity, her look paid homage to both haute couture history and modern reinterpretations. “It’s such a beautiful moment where costuming meets fashion and current trends, and also references beautiful historical fashion,” she explains. “I just find it to be so fascinating.”

For Barbaro, the Met Gala has always been more than a party—it’s an annual pilgrimage. “Every year, I go to the Met to see the exhibit afterward,” she says. “This is the first year I get to attend as part of the event.”

Her reverence for the museum’s blend of fashion and art was evident not only in her appreciation of the exhibit, but in how thoughtfully she approached her debut. Rather than opting for spectacle, Barbaro leaned into the evening’s more subtle invitation: to embrace tailoring as both a personal and historical narrative.

A night to remember

Barbaro’s Met Gala debut was met with critical acclaim. Many fashion commentators named her among the night’s best dressed, noting the elegance of her look and the deliberate restraint of her styling. For a night known for extravagance, her choice to lead with grace rather than grandeur proved powerful.

And while the photos from the blue carpet show poise and polish, it’s the moments behind the scenes—the excitement in her voice, the attention to each element, the genuine awe of being part of something she’d admired from afar—that truly capture the magic of her night. For Monica Barbaro, the 2025 Met Gala wasn’t just a red carpet debut. It was the merging of dream and reality, tradition and transformation, all stitched into a single, unforgettable Dior silhouette.
