Ashley Tisdale’s daughter mistakes Zac Efron for her real dad in sweet ‘High School Musical’ mix-up

While rewatching High School Musical, Ashley Tisdale’s toddler had an adorable moment of confusion, mistaking her mom’s onscreen co-star Zac Efron for her real-life dad. The actress opened up about the funny parenting moment and how her daughter is only just beginning to understand her mother’s Hollywood life.

A toddler’s take on Disney romance

Ashley Tisdale, best known to a generation of fans as the spirited Sharpay Evans in Disney’s High School Musical, is now experiencing her career through the eyes of a new, and very honest, audience: her toddler daughter, Jupiter. During a recent interview promoting the upcoming season of Phineas and Ferb, Tisdale shared a hilariously sweet anecdote about how her daughter is interpreting mom’s stardom—sometimes with a little confusion.

According to Tisdale, three-year-old Jupiter recently watched High School Musical and, seeing her mom on screen next to Zac Efron, mistakenly thought he was her actual father. “She did think Chris was Zac in High School Musical (was) her dad,” Tisdale laughed. “She’s like, ‘Daddy!’ I was like, ‘No, that’s not daddy.’”

While amusing, the story is also a revealing glimpse into how young children interpret the blurred lines between fiction and reality—especially when one of their parents lives part of their life on screen.

A slow understanding of the spotlight

Tisdale added that Jupiter is just beginning to grasp the concept of acting and the idea that her mom plays characters who aren’t exactly like her in real life. “In the last couple months her whole world has changed,” she joked. The shift came when Jupiter started watching Phineas and Ferb, the long-running animated show in which Tisdale voices the character of Candace Flynn.

Now recognizing her mom’s voice in cartoons as well as her face in movies, Jupiter is slowly piecing together the puzzle that is her mother’s multi-hyphenate entertainment career. But for a toddler still learning about the world, seeing mom sing and dance on screen with someone who isn’t dad understandably requires some clarification.

Tisdale’s husband, composer Christopher French, whom she married in 2014, shares two children with her: Jupiter, born in 2021, and baby Emerson, who arrived in 2023. Although French isn’t featured in any of her Disney Channel performances, it’s clear that in Jupiter’s mind, all charming men singing alongside her mom are fair game for fatherhood.

Revisiting Disney roots with fresh eyes

For Tisdale, moments like this are part of a broader experience of revisiting her iconic past through her children’s eyes. High School Musical, which first aired in 2006, made her a household name. Alongside Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, and Corbin Bleu, she helped define a Disney Channel generation. The franchise spawned two sequels in 2007 and 2008, and even led to a 2011 spinoff film Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure, which gave her beloved character a solo spotlight.

Now, almost two decades later, Tisdale is watching those performances through the lens of motherhood—and it’s adding an entirely new dimension to her legacy. “It’s so weird,” she’s previously shared in interviews, “to think about the impact those movies had, and now to see my own kids watching them.”

Jupiter may not fully understand what a film set is or what a script looks like, but she’s getting her first glimpses into the world of storytelling, fantasy, and performance—thanks to the very person who once taught a generation how to “bop to the top.”

Life after the limelight, but not far from it

Though Tisdale has taken on fewer acting roles in recent years, she’s remained active in the entertainment and wellness industries. In addition to voice acting for Phineas and Ferb, she’s launched lifestyle brand Frenshe, worked as a producer, and has stayed connected to fans through social media and public appearances.

The reboot of Phineas and Ferb marks a return to familiar territory. The show, which originally aired from 2007 to 2015, became a cult favorite thanks to its quirky humor, catchy musical numbers, and heartwarming sibling adventures. With Disney+ reviving the show, a new generation—including Jupiter—is discovering the joy of Candace’s obsessive quest to “bust her brothers.” It’s a full-circle moment for Tisdale, who now finds herself introducing her work to the next generation in the most personal way possible: from the couch, with a toddler by her side.

A story many families can relate to

In an era when many children are growing up with parents who create content, perform online, or appear in public roles, stories like Tisdale’s are increasingly relatable. Whether it’s a toddler mistaking a cartoon voice for mom or thinking a co-star is part of the family, the merging of media and real life is a growing part of modern parenting.

For fans of High School Musical, the story is a nostalgic and touching reminder of just how long the film has endured—and how its magic continues to reach new audiences, sometimes in the most unexpected ways.

As Jupiter grows up, she’ll no doubt come to understand more about her mom’s career. For now, she gets to live in a world where the lines between fantasy and reality blur just enough to make for great bedtime stories—and even better dinner table laughs.
