Mo Salah: A Premier League legend crowned again

Mohamed Salah has once again claimed the Premier League Player of the Season award, reaffirming his status as one of the most dominant figures in English football history. After leading Liverpool to a triumphant league campaign and breaking multiple records along the way, the Egyptian icon has solidified his legacy as one of the greats.

Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah applauds

A season of dominance for Liverpool’s talisman

At 32 years old, Mohamed Salah continues to defy expectations. This season, he led Liverpool to their first Premier League title since 2020, combining ruthless finishing with selfless playmaking. With 28 goals and 18 assists heading into the final day, Salah not only topped both charts but also came close to matching the all-time assist record held jointly by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.

The Premier League Player of the Season award, decided through a blend of public votes and input from a panel of experts, was once again his. It’s the second time Salah has received the honor, following his explosive debut campaign for Liverpool in 2017–18. That year, he introduced himself to the league with 32 goals. Seven years later, he remains its most consistent and feared forward.

In a season where stars from across the league shone — from Declan Rice’s midfield mastery at Arsenal to Alexander Isak’s goals for Newcastle — it was Salah’s combination of excellence and influence that earned him the nod. The Egyptian was not just Liverpool’s top scorer but also their primary creator, orchestrating attacks and inspiring teammates in equal measure.

Gravenberch shines as young player of the season

While Salah claimed the senior prize, the Young Player of the Season award went to one of his teammates: Ryan Gravenberch. The 23-year-old Dutch midfielder had a breakout season in England, establishing himself as a defensive lynchpin in Jürgen Klopp’s midfield.

Leading all Premier League midfielders with 59 interceptions, Gravenberch also topped Liverpool’s internal metrics for possessions won. His reading of the game, combined with his technical quality, gave Liverpool both stability and progression through the middle of the pitch. Gravenberch’s competition was fierce. Rising stars like Cole Palmer (Chelsea), Joao Pedro (Brighton), William Saliba (Arsenal), and Morgan Rogers (Aston Villa) were also shortlisted, alongside Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga and Bournemouth’s Dean Huijsen. Yet it was Gravenberch’s consistency, tactical maturity, and crucial interventions that saw him emerge ahead of the pack.

His evolution at Anfield marks a significant step for a player once seen as raw potential. Under Klopp’s guidance, he has grown into a complete midfielder — and now, a key figure in Liverpool’s next generation.

Salah the record-breaker

Salah’s individual milestones this season only add to the legend. With 28 league goals so far, he has surpassed all rivals — and in doing so, became the highest-scoring overseas player in Premier League history, overtaking Sergio Agüero’s mark of 184 goals.

In an era dominated by Manchester City’s squad depth and attacking machine, Salah’s brilliance stands out. This is the first time since 2018–19 that a City player has not won the Player of the Season award — a reflection of both Liverpool’s resurgence and Salah’s enduring influence.

Beyond goals, Salah’s 18 assists demonstrate a more rounded evolution in his game. Once known purely for his clinical finishing, the Egyptian forward has matured into a complete attacker. His vision, timing, and decision-making have elevated not just his own performances but those of his teammates. Salah also signed a new two-year extension with Liverpool this season, committing his future to the club until 2027. It’s a sign that, despite the inevitable passage of time, Salah still sees himself — and is seen by the club — as central to Liverpool’s ambitions.

A hero on and off the pitch

Salah’s impact extends beyond statistics and trophies. This month, he was named Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year for the third time, earning over 90% of the vote — an unprecedented landslide. His influence on the pitch is undeniable, but it is his professionalism, humility, and leadership that have endeared him to journalists and fans alike.

At a time when football is awash with short-term narratives and fleeting stardom, Salah offers something enduring: consistency, humility, and excellence. Whether it’s a Champions League night or a cold January fixture, Salah delivers. That reliability, combined with his flair and match-winning ability, has turned him into one of the Premier League’s most iconic figures. He also remains a symbol of pride for millions in the Arab world and across Africa. His success at the highest level of English football continues to inspire a generation of young footballers globally.

Liverpool’s bright future built on legacy

As Liverpool look ahead to a new era — one that will soon be without Jürgen Klopp on the touchline — Salah’s presence offers both continuity and inspiration. With emerging stars like Gravenberch, Darwin Núñez, and Curtis Jones making their mark, the foundation is strong. But it is Salah who remains the beating heart of this team.

The 2024–25 season may be remembered for Liverpool reclaiming their crown, but more than that, it will be remembered for Mohamed Salah — the player who, once again, rose above the rest and etched his name deeper into Premier League history. As the final whistle of the season approaches, Salah’s message is clear: he’s not finished yet.
