Meet the doctor who found a new longevity nutrient and the daily snack she swears by

In the quest for a longer, healthier life, we often hear about omega-3s, antioxidants, and superfoods. But a veterinary epidemiologist working with Navy dolphins uncovered a surprising new player in the field of longevity—a little-known saturated fatty acid called C15:0. Dr. Stephanie Venn-Watson’s decades-long research has not only shed light on this “longevity nutrient” but also revealed the simple dietary choices she makes to ensure she gets enough of it. From grass-fed cheeses to specially formulated supplements, Venn-Watson’s discoveries could transform how we think about aging and nutrition.

A chance discovery in aging dolphins

Dr. Stephanie Venn-Watson’s journey into longevity science began in an unexpected place: the U.S. Navy’s marine mammal program. Recruited in 2001 to study infectious diseases in dolphins, Venn-Watson quickly shifted focus. “I soon realized chronic diseases and aging were more pressing issues,” she explains. Unlike their wild counterparts who live about 20 years, Navy dolphins regularly live well past 40 or 50. Some dolphins developed age-related conditions such as inflammation, high cholesterol, and even brain changes reminiscent of Alzheimer’s disease. Others, however, aged healthily without these problems.

By analyzing thousands of biological samples collected over 50 years, Venn-Watson and her team set out to understand what distinguished the healthiest dolphins. They expected omega-3 fatty acids to be the key, given dolphins’ fish-based diet. Instead, they discovered something surprising: C15:0, a saturated fatty acid previously overlooked by science.

This discovery marked the first new essential fatty acid identified in over 90 years—a breakthrough that has profound implications for health and longevity. Further studies from independent researchers have supported the beneficial effects of C15:0 on metabolic health and inflammation, elevating its status to a vital nutrient for mammals, including humans.

The birth of a new supplement and a movement

Building on her research, Venn-Watson and her husband—a Navy physician—founded Seraphina Therapeutics. Together, they developed a C15:0 supplement designed to provide this longevity nutrient directly to humans. Earlier this year, Venn-Watson published The Longevity Nutrient, a book outlining the science behind C15:0 and practical ways to incorporate it into daily life.

Despite her groundbreaking discovery, Venn-Watson continues to emphasize the importance of a balanced diet rich in other proven nutrients. “My diet is high in fish and dairy fat,” she says. But the key is maximizing C15:0 intake—a task she accomplishes primarily through a surprisingly simple food source.

The cheese snack that fuels longevity

For Venn-Watson, the number one food to boost C15:0 levels is grass-fed cheese. “I’ll have a cheese snack almost every day,” she admits. Grass-fed cheeses come from animals raised on natural pastures and contain significantly higher levels of C15:0 compared to conventional dairy products.

To complement the cheese, Venn-Watson pairs it with high-fiber crackers—not the processed, carb-heavy kind. “Fiber is also crucial,” she notes, “so classic cheese and crackers with high-fiber crackers is one of my go-to snacks.” Among her favorites is pecorino, a cheese particularly rich in C15:0 and other nutrients. This daily habit reflects a broader approach to health: simple, accessible foods packed with powerful nutrients. The combination of C15:0 from grass-fed cheese and fiber from crackers supports not only longevity but overall metabolic and digestive health.

Supplementing with science-backed precision

Beyond diet, Venn-Watson takes her health a step further with supplements. “I supplement with what the Navy invested 10 years in making,” she shares, referring to the pure C15:0 supplement developed by Seraphina Therapeutics. This targeted approach ensures she receives a consistent and measurable dose of the longevity nutrient—something that can be harder to guarantee through diet alone.

Her commitment to science is unwavering. “We spend a significant amount of money on clinical studies to support our claims,” she says, underscoring the rigorous research that sets Seraphina’s products apart from typical supplements on the market.

What this means for you

Dr. Venn-Watson’s work challenges us to rethink the traditional view of aging and nutrition. While omega-3s have long dominated the conversation about healthy fats, C15:0 may soon join them as a vital nutrient for longevity. Eating grass-fed cheese regularly, choosing high-fiber accompaniments, and considering scientifically formulated supplements could offer a new pathway to aging well.

Her research also highlights the surprising lessons animals can teach us about human health. If Navy dolphins can live longer and healthier lives thanks to their unique fatty acid profile, it stands to reason that we can benefit from the same nutrients—whether through diet or supplementation.
