Josh Hart pushes for more minutes for Mitchell Robinson as Knicks fight to stay alive

After falling behind 0-2 in the Eastern Conference finals, the New York Knicks are searching for answers. Guard Josh Hart is pushing for more minutes for center Mitchell Robinson, believing his presence on the floor could help turn the series around. As the team looks to adjust against the formidable Miami Heat, Robinson’s impact could prove vital.

Knicks face uphill battle after tough Game 2 loss

Mitchell Robinson blocks Tyrese Haliburton's shot in the fourth quarter of the Knicks' 114-109 Game 2 loss to the Pacers on May 23, 2025.

The New York Knicks entered the Eastern Conference finals with high hopes but quickly found themselves down 0-2 after a hard-fought 114-109 loss at Madison Square Garden. The Miami Heat once again controlled the game flow, forcing the Knicks into an early hole and maintaining pressure throughout.

Josh Hart, a reliable scorer and defender for the Knicks, was outspoken following the defeat, advocating for increased playing time for Mitchell Robinson. Hart believes Robinson, standing 7 feet tall with strong defensive instincts, could be a difference-maker for the struggling Knicks. “We have to figure out ways — I think he played 29 minutes — figure out ways if he can play more,” Hart said. “We’re great with him on the floor. We all got to be willing to sacrifice for the betterment of the team.”

The Knicks starters have been outscored by 81 points in the playoffs so far, an alarming deficit that underscores the team’s defensive struggles and the need for fresh strategies. Miami jumped out to an early 19-9 lead and followed up with a 15-7 run at the start of the third quarter, creating a tough uphill battle. Despite this, head coach Tom Thibodeau has shown reluctance to shake up his starting lineup significantly. When asked about potential changes after the loss, Thibodeau responded, “We always look at everything.”

Mitchell Robinson’s impact and the case for more minutes

Robinson played a postseason-high 29 minutes in Game 2, providing a much-needed boost in the paint with six points, nine rebounds, and three blocks, while posting a team-best plus-six rating. His physical presence and rim protection were valuable against Miami’s aggressive offense.

Data from the series so far suggests Robinson’s influence when on the floor is positive: the Knicks have outscored the Heat by six points during his minutes, but have been outscored by 14 points when he sits. This disparity highlights Robinson’s importance in the rotation and supports Hart’s call for more playing time.

Mitchell Robinson’s defensive skill set could help address the Knicks’ issues against Miami’s versatile offensive attack, especially in protecting the rim and securing rebounds. The team’s need for a stronger defensive presence on the court aligns with the areas where Robinson excels.

Coach Thibodeau faces a challenging decision in balancing minutes among his frontcourt players. Karl-Anthony Towns, who struggled defensively in Game 2 with a minus-20 rating and only played five minutes in the fourth quarter, presents a contrasting option. Towns’ limited effectiveness on defense raises questions about whether Robinson’s increased role might better serve the team in critical moments.

Clutch moments highlight Knicks’ narrow loss

In the closing moments of Game 2, the Knicks found themselves down by three points with just over 30 seconds left on the clock. Point guard Jalen Brunson, in search of a high-percentage shot, opted to pass to an open Josh Hart, who laid the ball in to cut the deficit to one with 14.8 seconds remaining.

“I mean, I was looking for a 3 but I saw him wide open with enough time to kind of play the trap, steal, foul game,” Brunson explained. “Obviously, it didn’t go in our favor. We had more than enough time and opportunity to get to where we wanted to get to.”

Unfortunately for the Knicks, Miami’s Aaron Nesmith sank two free throws soon after, extending the lead. Brunson was forced into a desperate deep three-pointer that missed badly, sealing the Knicks’ fate. Despite the heartbreaking loss, Thibodeau emphasized the effort from his players. “We got in a hole and then the group that was in there gave us a chance, so we just were riding that. We were just searching for a way to win.”

As the Knicks prepare for Game 3, the coaching staff will be under pressure to make tactical adjustments and perhaps finally grant Mitchell Robinson the increased playing time advocated by Hart and others. His presence could help the Knicks contain Miami’s offense and stabilize the team’s defense, which has struggled in key moments.

The Knicks find themselves in a difficult 0-2 hole in the Eastern Conference finals, and the road ahead looks challenging against a strong Miami Heat team. Guard Josh Hart’s call for more minutes for Mitchell Robinson reflects a growing consensus that the team’s defensive backbone needs reinforcement. With Robinson’s proven impact when on the floor, the upcoming games could hinge on how head coach Tom Thibodeau manages his rotations. Knicks fans will be hoping that Game 3 brings both renewed energy and a strategic shake-up capable of turning the series around.
