Rina Sawayama Returns on Her Own Terms

Four years after Hold the Girl, Rina Sawayama says new music is ready—but the pause has not been empty. Acting in John Wick: Chapter 4, developing further screen projects, co-founding the beauty brand Godmode and becoming Haku Vodka’s first global ambassador expanded her creative identity while prompting changes behind the scenes of her business. Her next release is expected in 2027, with confidence replacing the breathless momentum that followed her 2020 debut. The interval matters because Sawayama’s genre collisions have always depended on control: maximal pop only works when the artist can shape the system around it. Her return promises not simply more music, but a more sustainable authorship of the career carrying it.

Four Years Is Not an Absence

Hold the Girl arrived in September 2022, extending the promise of Rina Sawayama’s debut through an ambitious mixture of arena rock, country-pop, dance music and intimate confession. A four-year gap without another album inevitably generated questions, particularly among listeners accustomed to rapid release cycles. Yet Sawayama did not disappear. She redistributed her creative attention across film, business, collaborations and structural work behind the scenes.

She appeared in John Wick: Chapter 4 and developed further acting projects, including Apple TV’s Prodigies with Ayo Edebiri and Will Sharpe. Guest tracks with MUNA and Empress Of kept musical connections active. The pause therefore looks less like retreat than an attempt to prevent momentum from dictating every decision.

Rebuilding the Machinery Around the Art

Sawayama has said she changed substantial parts of the internal structure of her business before preparing the new release. That detail is as important as any studio hint. Pop careers require management, label relationships, touring systems, creative approvals and schedules that can either protect an artist’s ideas or exhaust them. When a project grows quickly, the surrounding organization may lag behind the ambition.

Her description of success conveys physical cost: the body and mind cannot always process expansion at the speed an industry celebrates it. Taking time allowed her to appreciate what had happened and decide how future work should move. This is not glamorous labor, but it can determine whether a musician owns the pace of an era or merely survives it.

Godmode and the Logic of World-Building

Godmode, the beauty brand Sawayama launched with Chloë Grace Moretz, extends her interest in transformation beyond sound. Beauty can be treated as a celebrity side business, yet the venture also aligns with a performer whose visual worlds have moved between Y2K gloss, metal aggression, theatrical femininity and futuristic polish. Product becomes another way to stage identity.

The risk of expansion is dilution. Audiences may wonder whether entrepreneurship postpones music or turns artistic trust into a sales channel. Sawayama’s challenge is to make each project distinct enough to justify itself while allowing values and visual intelligence to travel between them. A strong album will clarify the relationship by placing music back at the center rather than asking a brand to substitute for it.

Acting Changed the Scale of Performance

John Wick: Chapter 4 required a different form of discipline from a concert. Film fragments performance into shots, asks for repetition and places physical action inside a tightly coordinated technical environment. Sawayama’s stage experience supplied presence, but acting demanded responsiveness to camera, choreography and ensemble storytelling.

Future screen work may return those lessons to music. Her songs already shift rapidly between personas and genres, and acting can deepen the distinction between confession and character. It may also make her more comfortable with narrative projects that unfold across videos, live design and album sequencing. The point is not to predict a cinematic concept record, but to recognize that creative practices alter one another even when their products remain separate.

Confidence Before the Next Release

Sawayama now describes herself as confident in both the music and the fans who are still waiting. That confidence differs from the urgency of proving a debut. SAWAYAMA established a vocabulary through tracks such as “XS” and “Comme des Garçons (Like the Boys),” while Hold the Girl expanded its emotional and commercial scale. The next project can ask which parts of that vocabulary still feel necessary.

She has said the best art can come from remaining with discomfort for a long time. The remark suggests that the gap has involved more than scheduling. A new album expected in 2027 will arrive after the performer has tested other industries and reconsidered how her own operation works. Listeners want songs, but the most encouraging signal is that Sawayama is preparing conditions in which those songs can belong to her. The return is taking time because control, not speed, is the central promise.

The Haku ambassadorship adds another layer to that negotiation. As the brand’s first global ambassador, Sawayama connects Japanese heritage, international celebrity and a campaign built around craft. Such work can appear peripheral to an album, yet it reveals how modern musicians finance and frame long creative cycles. The relevant question is not whether commercial partnerships exist, but whether they leave enough time and authority for the artist to make work that is not governed by the campaign calendar.
