Avengers: Doomsday – the multiversal storm that reshapes everything

Avengers: Doomsday is not just the fifth Avengers film—it’s the pivot point of the entire Multiverse Saga. With Robert Downey Jr. returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a shocking new role and the Russos back at the helm, Marvel is gearing up for what might be the most ambitious crossover yet. Here’s everything we know so far about the film that could redefine the Avengers legacy.

A seismic shift behind the scenes

The journey to Avengers: Doomsday has been anything but ordinary. Originally titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, the film underwent a dramatic transformation after Jonathan Majors was dropped from the MCU in December 2023. This led to a reworking of the entire narrative, replacing Kang the Conqueror with a new central antagonist—Doctor Doom.

Marvel confirmed at Comic-Con 2024 that Joe and Anthony Russo would return to direct both Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, taking over from Destin Daniel Cretton. Screenwriter Michael Waldron, who was already developing Secret Wars, also came on board to write Doomsday. With filming officially starting in early 2025, Marvel launched a quirky five-hour livestream featuring chairs that revealed the star-studded cast, including both surprising returns and notable absences.

The return of legends and the rise of Doom

The most headline-grabbing revelation was Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU—but not as Iron Man. This time, he takes on the role of Victor Von Doom, a twist that sent fans into a frenzy. Whether this Doctor Doom is a Tony Stark variant or from the Fantastic Four’s universe remains to be seen.

Joining Downey Jr. are a host of iconic characters across Marvel properties. Confirmed cast members include Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Florence Pugh, Simu Liu, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, and Tom Hiddleston, among others. In a nostalgic turn, several original X-Men actors such as Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, and Rebecca Romijn are also returning.

While Tom Holland’s Spider-Man is notably absent for now, Downey Jr. has teased more casting news to come. Rumors swirl around Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, and Brie Larson, while Benedict Cumberbatch has offered conflicting statements about his involvement.

New teams, new threats, and multiversal stakes

Avengers: Doomsday is set against a backdrop of shifting alliances and fractured realities. As teased in Captain America: Brave New World, Sam Wilson is asked to rebuild the Avengers, but the Thunderbolts* post-credit scene complicates this effort. Yelena Belova, Red Guardian, Ghost, John Walker, and Bucky Barnes are rebranded as the “New Avengers” by Valentina Allegra de Fontaine.

This fragmentation of the superhero community hints at multiple Avengers teams, including the potential debut of the Young Avengers. With Kate Bishop, Kamala Khan, and others gradually entering the fold, the stage is set for a generational shift in the MCU. Doomsday may be where these disparate threads finally converge—or clash.

A mystery wrapped in multiverse chaos

Despite the massive cast and returning creatives, the plot of Avengers: Doomsday remains tightly under wraps. Originally set to expand on the Council of Kangs teased in Quantumania, the film now appears to pivot toward Doctor Doom as the central threat.

Director Joe Russo hinted that the film takes a “very radical” approach to its narrative, one that aims to challenge the audience. All signs suggest that Doomsday will serve as the lead-in to Avengers: Secret Wars, with elements from Brave New World and Thunderbolts* laying essential groundwork. The Fantastic Four’s spacecraft entering MCU orbit, as seen in Thunderbolts*’s post-credit scene, could also play a major role.

Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on 1 May 2026. A trailer is expected sometime in early 2026, possibly following Comic-Con in July.
