The Polished Rebellion: How Fashion’s New ‘Polished Rock’ Aesthetic Is Redefining Nostalgia

For the last half-decade, the fashion world has been in a state of digital hyperdrive, careening from one microtrend to the next. The frenzied cycle of Y2K, McBling, and the eventual rise and fall of the quiet luxury aesthetic left many feeling exhausted and disconnected from personal style. But now, as the sweeping haze of cashmere cardigans and wide-legged trousers begins to lift, a new hybrid style has emerged—a measured extravagance that blends late-20th-century power dressing with the nonchalant attitude of 2010s grunge. This is “polished rock,” a confident and elevated aesthetic that proves you can be both refined and rebellious. This is not a fleeting trend but a meaningful evolution, one rooted in nostalgia and a desire for a more authentic form of self-expression.

From Fatigue to Fusion: The Birth of a New Aesthetic

The emergence of polished rock is the result of two major phenomena converging. First, there’s the continued cultural obsession with the past, which has been accelerated by social media platforms like TikTok. “Younger people are obsessed with what they see on social media. And a lot of social media fashion content right now is about the past,” says fashion writer and author Kristen Bateman. This has led to a digital excavation of iconic moments and items, from the return of Chloé’s updated Paddington bag to Saint Laurent’s decadent lace and gold accessories straight from its ’80s archive. Second, this trend is a direct rebuttal to the quest for aesthetic perfection that defined the quiet luxury movement. It’s an intentional rebellion against the idea that fashion must be flawless and a return to a more flippant, devil-may-care attitude that feels refreshingly real.

The Art of Undone: Gloss and Grit on the Runway

The runways of the fall 2025 collections served as the proving ground for this new aesthetic. At Isabel Marant, artistic director Kim Bekker aimed for a “tousled but composed look,” drawing inspiration from British rock bands like Siouxsie and the Banshees. Her vision was a deliberate clash of tailoring and an IDGAF attitude, which she described as “something very delicate and romantic, with something tough over it.” The result was looks like a lace blouse paired with a masculine coat, a perfect balance of gloss and intentional undone-ness. Similarly, Vaquera’s Fall 2025 collection leaned into a more theatrical version of this style. As Francesca Granata, an associate professor of fashion studies at Parsons School of Design, explains, the show’s “masculine, broad-shouldered silhouettes” feel transgressive and defiant in a fashion landscape saturated with curated femininity.

The Godfather of Grunge Glamour: Hedi Slimane

If a single designer could be credited with pioneering the polished rock aesthetic, it would be Hedi Slimane. In his prior roles as creative director for Dior Homme, Saint Laurent, and Celine, Slimane has consistently championed a glamorous grunge style that marries sharp, streamlined tailoring with the attitude of youth culture. His designs, while deeply rooted in luxury materials, have always had a rebellious edge. Slimane’s foresight in connecting with younger generations is unparalleled; in 2021, he staged a runway show for Celine inspired by TikTok Eboys, long before the industry at large embraced the app. His ability to fuse high fashion with the street-level authenticity of youth culture is a hallmark of the polished rock aesthetic, proving that it’s a style that transcends generations. The kids are buying into it, too. As London designer Aaron Esh jokes, he knows people who would sleep in a $5,000 Celine jacket, a testament to the trend’s aspirational allure.

A New Authenticity: Beyond the Trend Cycle

Unlike its late-aughts predecessor, “indie sleaze,” the polished rock revival is far more refined and less DIY. As Kristen Bateman notes, today’s social media-driven world makes a true “rock ’n’ roll culture” with its inherent messiness feel impossible to replicate. This new aesthetic, however, offers a solution by focusing on quality and authenticity. Independent designers like Aaron Esh have been operating on the fringes of the trend cycle, creating clothing that is unafraid to contradict itself—pairing a tattered baseball cap with a draped dress, for instance. Esh credits his authenticity to referencing “real people” he knows, rather than relying on digital trends. He finds his inspiration in the timeless luxury of a ’50s Balenciaga cocoon coat, showing that even in this rebellious era, there’s a deep respect for classic glamour. Polished rock cherry-picks the best parts of numerous eras, allowing for a personal, cherry-picked style that feels more lasting than any fleeting microtrend.
