Inter Miami star forward Luis Suárez has been hit with an additional three-match suspension by Major League Soccer (MLS) for a spitting incident that occurred in the chaotic aftermath of the Leagues Cup final. The episode, which saw Suárez at the center of a post-match scuffle after Miami’s 3-0 loss to the Seattle Sounders, included the Uruguayan grabbing an opposing player before spitting in the direction of a Sounders staff member. The MLS ban comes on top of a separate six-match ban issued by Leagues Cup organizers, which is suspended until the next edition of that tournament. Suárez, whose career has been marked by instances of misconduct, has issued an apology, but the latest punishment ensures he will miss three crucial MLS fixtures as his club continues its push toward the playoffs.
The Post-Match Melee and Disciplinary Action
The catalyst for the disciplinary action was the heated confrontation that immediately followed the final whistle of the Leagues Cup final on August 31, where the Seattle Sounders defeated Inter Miami 3-0. Video footage of the scuffle confirmed Suárez’s involvement, which included him initially grabbing Seattle midfielder Obed Vargas around the neck. The more serious offense, however, was captured moments later when the veteran striker was seen shouting and then spitting in the direction of a Seattle Sounders staff member, later identified as Steven Lenhart.
Major League Soccer quickly imposed its own sanctions, suspending Suárez for three MLS regular-season matches. This ban is separate from the six-match suspension issued by the Leagues Cup Disciplinary Committee, which will only apply to future editions of that tournament. The MLS suspension means Suárez is set to miss fixtures against Charlotte FC, DC United, and a league rematch with the Seattle Sounders, sidelining a key figure during a critical stretch of the season.
Punishments Extend Beyond the Star Striker
The disciplinary fallout from the Leagues Cup final extended beyond Luis Suárez, affecting personnel from both teams. MLS also issued sanctions against the Seattle Sounders organization and one of its staff members for their roles in the melee. Seattle’s mental-skills coach, Steven Lenhart, had his gameday credentials revoked for the remainder of the 2025 season and playoffs, meaning he is prohibited from being on or near the field of play, in the locker rooms, or the tunnel.
Furthermore, the Seattle Sounders club was fined an undisclosed amount for “misappropriation of credentials,” presumably linked to the involvement of Lenhart in the altercation. Notably, while Suárez’s teammates Sergio Busquets and Tomás Avilés were handed Leagues Cup bans for their roles in the post-match fracas—two matches and three matches, respectively—neither player received any additional punishment from MLS for league play.
A Familiar Pattern and Public Apology
The spitting incident adds another chapter to Luis Suárez’s long and controversial career, which has seen his immense talent frequently overshadowed by his on-field misconduct. The 38-year-old has previously served multiple high-profile suspensions, including three separate bans for biting opponents while playing for Ajax, Liverpool, and the Uruguayan national team. He was also famously banned for eight matches by the English FA in 2011 for being found guilty of racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra.
Following the Leagues Cup final, the striker issued an apology via Instagram, acknowledging his mistake. He stated: “It was a very tense and frustrating moment. Things happened right after the match that shouldn’t have happened, but that doesn’t justify my reaction. I was wrong and I sincerely regret it.” Inter Miami also released a general statement condemning the “altercations” and affirming their commitment to “upholding the highest standards of sportsmanship,” though they stopped short of naming Suárez specifically in their official condemnation.
