S.W.A.T. Exiles set to bridge generations with familiar faces

Following the recent finale of S.W.A.T., Sony Pictures Television has quickly announced a spinoff titled S.W.A.T. Exiles. The new series will not only bring back Shemar Moore as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson but will also feature other beloved characters from the original show, promising fans a continuation of the universe they’ve come to love.

David Lim as Victor Tan, Annie Ilonzeh as Devin Gamble, Niko Pepaj as Miguel Alfaro, Shemar Moore as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson, Anna Enger Ritch as Zoe Powell, Patrick St. Esprit Commander Robert Hicks and Jay Harrington as David “Deacon” Kay.

Expanding the S.W.A.T. universe

The announcement of S.W.A.T. Exiles came mere days after the original series concluded, signaling Sony Pictures TV’s eagerness to keep the franchise alive. Katherine Pope, President of Sony Pictures Television, confirmed to Variety that fans should expect “favorites” from the original series to appear in the spinoff. She described the original show and Exiles as existing within the same universe, providing a familiar yet fresh playground for storytelling.

“There is a clear world that we’re exploring here,” Pope said, emphasizing that while details are still being finalized, the new series will connect with the established characters and themes fans cherish. The spinoff will offer new perspectives while maintaining the spirit and continuity of the original show.

A generational clash at the heart of Exiles

Pope also shed light on the unique premise behind S.W.A.T. Exiles, describing it as “a bit of a take on the culture generation clash of Gen X versus Gen Z.” The show will explore tensions and misunderstandings between older, duty-driven characters like Hondo—who values hierarchy and chain of command—and younger Gen Z characters who openly discuss mental health and personal well-being.

Drawing comparisons to Top Gun: Maverick, Pope explained, “How do we build bridges around not just generational divides, but all forms of divide? There’s a lot of division going on in our world. If we just took some time to listen and to try and be part of a team, and what that really means, it would probably be better for all of us.” This socially conscious angle aims to add depth and relevance to the high-action police drama formula.

Quick development and strong team behind the scenes

The spinoff came together swiftly after CBS officially canceled S.W.A.T., marking the third time the network has pulled the original series. Despite the setbacks, the team behind S.W.A.T. remains passionate about continuing the story.

S.W.A.T. Exiles will run for an initial 10-episode season with Jason Ning serving as showrunner. Executive producers include Neal H. Mortiz, Pavun Shetty, James Scura, and Shemar Moore himself, who continues to champion the franchise.

Reflecting on his journey, Moore said, “My eight seasons on S.W.A.T. have been epic and memorable. We entertained the world, defied the odds, came back from the dead twice, and continued to woo fans and families worldwide.” He expressed excitement about carrying the show’s legacy forward, adding, “I will keep the franchise, thrill ride action, heartfelt drama, and storytelling of S.W.A.T. alive. WE DON’T LOSE!!!! ROLL SWAT!!!”

Hours after the announcement, Moore shared an Instagram video where he dubbed himself the “Tom Brady of S.W.A.T.” and praised his former castmates as “a strong squad, a family, a team,” signaling that the camaraderie and spirit of the original show will endure.
