Jenna Ortega on Sudden Fame and the Return of Wednesday

Jenna Ortega describes the overwhelming experience of instant fame after starring in Netflix’s hit series Wednesday, which became the platform’s most-watched English-language show after its 2022 debut. The upcoming second season promises a deeper look into Wednesday Addams’s family, with Morticia and Gomez Addams playing larger roles.

The Weight of Instant Stardom

Jenna Ortega Was Overwhelmed By Sudden Fame Following Wednesday's Success

Jenna Ortega, now 22, admits that the rapid rise to fame following her role as Wednesday Addams was “very overwhelming.” Speaking with BBC culture correspondent Lizo Mzimba, Ortega reflected on how grateful she is that the show resonated so widely with viewers, despite the sudden spotlight.

“When the show premiered, we didn’t know what to expect,” she said. “The attention was a lot to handle, and honestly, I’m not sure anyone is ever truly ready for that kind of fame.” Ortega emphasized that the experience should not be viewed as “normal” and remains something she is still processing. Nevertheless, she feels thankful for the opportunity and connection with the audience.

Expanding the Addams Family Universe

The second season of Wednesday shifts focus to include more from the Addams family’s parents, Morticia and Gomez, with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán stepping into larger roles on screen. This new dynamic offers a richer exploration of the family ties and conflicts.

Ortega highlights the relatable tension between Wednesday and Morticia, explaining, “It’s typical for mothers and daughters to butt heads. Wednesday wants space to grow and be her own person, while Morticia wants to protect her and shield her from hardships.” She praises Zeta-Jones as a “divine presence” and is eager for audiences to see more of the veteran actress in the role.

Behind the Scenes: A Growing Role for Ortega

In addition to starring, Ortega has taken on the role of executive producer for the second season. She describes the experience as an educational journey and has absorbed as much knowledge as possible behind the camera.

How Wednesday fame changed Jenna Ortega's life

Although there was a three-year gap between seasons, Ortega appreciates the time it allowed. “Viewers have been very patient, and we want to honor that by delivering something fresh and exciting.” Her involvement in production signals her growing influence and commitment to the series.

Themes of Family and Identity in a Modern World

Ortega believes the show’s success comes from its honest portrayal of a family that is both strange and deeply connected. “The Addamses don’t fit the typical mold, but their unity is something everyone can relate to,” she said.

She also points out the series’ relevance in today’s digitally connected yet isolated world. “People are finding community online more than in person, which can feel isolating. Wednesday’s story touches on finding your voice and belonging in a chaotic world.”

Catherine Zeta-Jones echoes this sentiment, calling the Addamses “the ultimate modern family” who embrace individuality and uniqueness rather than hiding it.
