A timeless match: NHL star Patrik Laine weds Jordan Smith in glamorous Palm Beach celebration

Patrik Laine, winger for the Montreal Canadiens, has officially scored off the ice. The 27-year-old NHL star tied the knot with longtime partner Jordan Smith in a luxurious wedding at The Breakers in Palm Beach, Florida, on June 28. Surrounded by 115 guests, including hockey teammates from past and present, the couple celebrated their love in a celebration as deeply personal as it was lavish.

Two styles, one vision

The couple’s wedding was a collision of contrasting tastes — and that’s exactly how they wanted it. “Patty and I have very different personalities and styles,” says Smith, a mental health advocate. “His is more wild and colorful, and mine is sophisticated chic.” This duality shaped every detail, from venue selection to wedding attire.

The festivities began with a rehearsal dinner at the vibrant Colony Hotel, a venue chosen to reflect Laine’s bold personality. The following day’s ceremony was held at the historic Breakers resort, whose opulent and classic setting suited Smith’s refined aesthetic. The Gilded Age-era hotel, once frequented by magnates like J.P. Morgan and Andrew Carnegie, offered the timeless backdrop the couple had envisioned for their celebration.

“We wanted our guests — who came from as far as Finland and Hawaii — to have an unforgettable experience,” Laine explains. “It had to feel iconic.”

A ceremony full of meaning

The wedding ceremony took place in The Breakers’ gilded Gold Room and was officiated by Laine’s close family friend, Antti Makinen. The couple exchanged handwritten vows, a decision they made to ensure the moment felt as intimate and personal as possible. “It gives guests a special window into our relationship,” says Laine.

Their processional music reflected deep emotional notes. Laine entered to a string rendition of David Guetta’s “Titanium,” while Smith walked down the aisle to Hillsong United’s “Oceans” — a song that reminded her of her late mother, who passed away from cancer when Smith was just 14. “I wanted subtle but significant ways to acknowledge her throughout the evening,” she shares.

Adding a touching break from tradition, Smith’s grandmother served as the flower girl, delighting guests and underscoring the couple’s commitment to family and sentiment.

Looks that told their own love story

Smith stunned in Galia Lahav’s “Evelyn” gown, a structured ballgown with a corset bodice, illusion panels, and embroidered Spanish florals. Remarkably, it was the first dress she had saved on Pinterest. “I kept coming back to it — it just felt right,” she says.

Laine, meanwhile, worked with designer Ethan Wiseman — who also outfits him for NHL events — to create a standout tuxedo. Keeping the look a surprise from Smith, he collaborated with her in secret by referencing her gown and mood board. “Patty’s style has always been important to him,” says Smith. “I knew people would be just as excited to see what the groom wore as the bride.”

The couple opted for a “big cinematic reveal” at the altar, skipping a first look to savor the emotion of the moment. “It was a fierce competition,” Smith laughs.

A night of dancing, decadence, and ’90s nods

Following the ceremony, guests transitioned to a lavish reception in The Breakers’ Circle Ballroom. Smith changed into a second dress — a beaded Berta gown with a hint of Old Hollywood glamour. “It gave Gatsby, but without looking like I was in a costume,” she says.

Dinner included multiple courses and global cuisine stations — with highlights like panko-crusted sea bass, herb-grilled filet mignon, and hearts of palm cake. Dessert came with flair: a towering martini glass filled with three flavors of ice cream in a custom sundae, a Breakers specialty. “It’s definitely a wow factor,” Smith says.

Their five-tier cake, complete with a vintage bride-and-groom topper, paid homage to wedding films of the ‘90s — cherries and all. To avoid waste, slices were boxed up for guests to take back to their rooms. “Wedding cake for breakfast is totally underrated,” Smith quips. The couple also surprised their guests with a choreographed first dance to Kygo’s acoustic version of “Woke Up in Love,” a routine they perfected during pre-wedding date nights. “There was a lift and a dip,” Laine reveals. “We knew our families were going to be shocked.”

A love story that started unexpectedly

Laine and Smith’s journey began in an unlikely place: a bar in Columbus, Ohio, where Smith was visiting for a friend’s wedding. Laine, then playing for the Columbus Blue Jackets, happened to be there too. Although they went their separate ways — Laine to Finland, Smith to Washington, D.C. — they kept in touch through FaceTime calls that gradually deepened into something more.

For Laine, it was love at first sight. Smith was a bit more cautious — until he flew from Finland to Miami to surprise her during a girls’ trip. “We’ve been attached at the hip ever since,” Laine says. Laine proposed during a private beach dinner in Turks and Caicos in February 2024, timing it with Smith’s birthday and the NHL All-Star break.

A future focused on purpose

After honeymooning in Italy — with stops planned in Rome, Positano, and the Amalfi Coast — the newlyweds will return to Montreal, where Laine will prepare for the upcoming NHL season. But their work won’t stop at hockey.

The couple is committed to growing their nonprofit initiative From Us to You, a mental health platform launched after Laine took a step back from the NHL to prioritize his well-being. “We wanted to create a space where others could share stories of resilience and healing,” Smith says.

Originally an Instagram page, the project has grown into a full-fledged nonprofit. Their first major fundraising event — a public fashion show — is set for August at Montreal’s M.A.D. Festival. As they look ahead, Laine and Smith are excited for what’s next. “We’re having all the conversations you fantasize about when you’re dating — about homes, kids, the future,” says Laine. Smith doesn’t hesitate to add, with a laugh: “I’m ready for baby Laines.”
