Brad Pitt’s need for speed: how Hollywood’s leading man conquered the Formula 1 track

Brad Pitt has played fighters, astronauts, and secret agents—but his latest role may be his most high-octane yet. In F1: The Movie, the Hollywood icon slips behind the wheel as fictional driver Sonny Hayes, a retired racer returning to the grid. To make it convincing, Pitt didn’t just act like an F1 driver—he became one.

Months of real racing to master the part

To prepare for F1: The Movie, Pitt underwent an intensive four-to-five-month training program that went far beyond typical Hollywood boot camps. The actor trained in modified Formula 2 cars customized with aerodynamics to simulate the feel of a real Formula 1 machine. Under the close supervision of seasoned racing professionals and stunt coordinators, he learned to maneuver high-speed vehicles with precision, mastering everything from track etiquette to braking technique.

But the training wasn’t limited to physical stunts. Pitt also spent long hours in professional racing simulators, building muscle memory and internalizing the rhythms of a real Grand Prix. The goal? To make every scene in the film indistinguishable from reality. By the end of his training, Pitt wasn’t just playing Sonny Hayes—he was driving like him.

Lewis hamilton was impressed—and involved

One of the film’s biggest assets wasn’t on screen but behind the scenes: Lewis Hamilton. The seven-time Formula 1 World Champion not only served as a producer but also acted as a mentor to Pitt throughout filming. Hamilton helped design the training curriculum, lent technical authenticity to the script, and guided Pitt on the subtleties that separate amateurs from elite racers.

Hamilton has spoken publicly about his admiration for Pitt’s dedication and natural talent. Despite being well into his 60s, Pitt handled the rigors of the sport with surprising agility. Hamilton even noted that some of Pitt’s driving “wouldn’t look out of place in the midfield of an actual race,” a testament to the actor’s commitment and athleticism.

Filming on real tracks brought the movie to life

Much of F1: The Movie was shot during actual Formula 1 race weekends, including the Las Vegas Grand Prix, the Mexico City race, and the Abu Dhabi and Hungarian circuits. Pitt’s character competed in these races alongside real drivers, teams, and pit crews. With unprecedented access granted by Formula 1’s governing bodies, the filmmakers were able to capture on-track sequences with a level of realism rarely seen in sports films.

This immersive approach extended to the production’s technical teams. Real engineers, team principals, and pit crews were used to lend authenticity to the scenes, creating a hybrid world where fiction and reality blended seamlessly. For Pitt, it meant performing in front of thousands of live spectators and working under the same high-stakes pressure that real drivers face every weekend.

A passion project that paid off

Pitt’s commitment didn’t end when the cameras stopped rolling. Cast and crew frequently noted that the actor was often reluctant to wrap up shooting at the end of long, physically demanding days. He treated each race weekend like an athlete preparing for a title bout—meticulous, focused, and unwilling to leave anything to chance.

That level of devotion paid off. Since its premiere at Radio City Music Hall in June 2025, F1: The Movie has earned over $466 million at the global box office, making it one of the year’s top earners. Critics praised the film’s raw energy, emotional depth, and the shocking realism of its racing scenes. For audiences, it wasn’t just another sports drama—it was a front-row seat to the fastest show on earth, driven by a man who refused to fake it.
