The bag that started it all: Jane Birkin’s original Hermès goes up for auction

The very first Hermès Birkin bag — the prototype that sparked a four-decade fashion legend — is set to go under the hammer this July. Once casually sketched on an airplane sickness bag by style icon Jane Birkin herself, the original leather tote will headline Sotheby’s “Fashion Icons” sale in Paris, with collectors and fashion lovers worldwide watching closely.

A legend born in the sky

In 1984, a chance meeting between British-French singer and actress Jane Birkin and then-Hermès CEO Jean-Louis Dumas changed fashion history. Seated side by side on a flight, Birkin lamented the lack of stylish yet practical handbags and imagined a spacious, elegant carryall “half the size of my suitcase.” Dumas challenged her to sketch her dream bag — which she did, using the only paper on hand: an airplane sickness bag.

That mid-air drawing laid the foundation for what would become one of the most recognizable and sought-after fashion accessories in the world: the Hermès Birkin bag. Known for its clean lines, exceptional craftsmanship, and air of exclusivity, the bag has since become a powerful symbol of luxury, its waiting list often stretching years. But only one can be called the original — and it is this very bag that will soon be up for auction.

From functional fashion to cultural icon

Sotheby’s, which will lead the auction on July 10 in Paris, has described the piece as “The Original Birkin.” All-black, with saddle stitching, brass hardware, and Jane Birkin’s own initials — “J.B” — stamped on the front flap, the bag is visibly distinct from later models. Among its unique features are metal rings, a shoulder strap, and a pair of nail clippers dangling from the handle — all hallmarks of Birkin’s personal, unpretentious style. “There are rare moments in the world of fashion when an object transcends trends and becomes a legend,” said Morgane Halimi, Sotheby’s global head of handbags and fashion, in a statement. “Jane Birkin’s Original Birkin bag is such a moment.”

Halimi places the bag alongside other historic fashion artifacts with pop cultural resonance, such as Princess Diana’s iconic “black sheep” sweater and Freddie Mercury’s regal crown and cloak. Though Sotheby’s has not disclosed a price estimate, expectations are high for what could be a record-breaking sale.

Jane Birkin’s legacy, stitched in leather

Jane Birkin passed away in 2023, but her influence endures — perhaps nowhere more visibly than in the bag that bears her name. Despite a celebrated career in music and film, Birkin herself often joked about being remembered primarily for the handbag. In a 2020 interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpour, she mused, “Bless me, when I’m dead… (people) will possibly only talk about the bag.”

And while that may have been said with a hint of irony, it speaks to how deeply the Birkin bag has embedded itself in the fabric of fashion and pop culture. With an aura of effortless Parisian cool, Birkin embodied a new kind of luxury — understated, functional, and rooted in authenticity. That same philosophy continues to shape the image of the bag today.

From exhibition to auction block

Before its highly anticipated sale in Paris, the original Birkin is on display at Sotheby’s New York galleries from June 6 to 12. Thousands of admirers have already seen the bag during its earlier exhibitions in Paris and Hong Kong, signaling the global excitement around its upcoming auction.

Unlike most luxury accessories, the Birkin bag has always been more than just an item of fashion. It’s a status symbol, an investment piece, and for many collectors, a narrative object — one that tells a story of craftsmanship, celebrity, and serendipity. The original Birkin, with its personalized modifications and literal hand-drawn origins, encapsulates all of these qualities.

The future of fashion history

As interest in vintage luxury and fashion provenance continues to rise, rare pieces like Jane Birkin’s original bag are increasingly seen not only as accessories, but as artifacts. Items owned or worn by cultural icons are drawing collectors from both the fashion world and the fine art market. In this sense, the upcoming sale is more than an auction — it’s a moment of cultural and commercial significance.

Whether it breaks records or simply reaffirms its legendary status, “The Original Birkin” will remain a testament to an unexpected collaboration between an artist and a fashion house — and to the enduring charm of a woman whose name became synonymous with timeless elegance. As Halimi put it, “The Original Birkin holds the potential to redefine records.” But it has already done something far greater — it redefined what luxury could look like for generations to come.
